Four Natural Ways To Get Lady Bugs To Move On From Your Home

Posted on

They're cute when you find just one or two, but lady bugs can become a major nuisance when they descend on your home in droves. These tiny beetles can leave behind black spots from their feces on your home's structures, and some varieties may bite or sting! Thankfully, there are a few ways you can drive them away naturally.

Turn Off the Lights

Like most beetles, lady bugs are attracted to light. You probably have a porch light, a spotlight, or some landscaping lights that turn on at night. Switch all of these off (and temporarily remove all of your solar landscaping lights.) It will take a few days, but many of the bugs will move on from your house once they realize there is no light source at night.

Plant Mums

Mums are unappealing to lady bugs, so planting some around your home may help you get rid of these pesky insects. If you do not want mums to become a permanent part of your landscape, just buy a few potted ones and place them around the exterior of your home. As the plants die and dry up, you can remove the leaves and flowers and crumple them into a powder. Scatter this around your home's exterior perimeter and it will keep on repelling the lady bugs.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is a substance made from the exoskeletons of tiny sea creatures called diatoms. To you, it just looks like a fine powder, but on the microscopic level, it is like shards of sharp glass. It's completely safe for humans and pets — don't worry — but it is hazardous to insects like lady bugs. Scatter some around the perimeter of your home, and it will dehydrate lady bugs that come into contact with it, slowly killing them off.

Cloves

Cloves are another ingredient that lady bugs find unappealing. You could sprinkle some ground cloves around the outside of your home, or even make sachets with whole cloves and place them inside your home in little areas where you've been seeing a lot of lady bugs. Thankfully, cloves have a pleasant scent, so you won't mind having them around.

In most cases, you'll have the best luck if you combine a few of the ideas above to fight off the lady bugs. If you want to find more information, contact a pest control company. They can come apply stronger repellents to get rid of these pesky bugs.
